Still Need to Finish That Essay

January 20, 2006 *~* 4:40 p.m.

It's nice being home again in Portland. The apartment's too cold and the electric heating bill was ridiculously high for that last month we were here, so obviously we cannot keep the house as warm as I'd like (which is distressing! with that much money poured into heating, how was the apartment still cool-ish, if not down right cold at times?!). I will have to develop an insulating layer of blubber, or a keener sense of layerable fashion, or just hold out for summertime. Oh summer!

I was delighted the other morning to be driving back home at 6:45 or so and notice the sky was lightening and the sun was rising over in the east. Given that I opened the bakery at 6:30 repeatedly over the break, I am confident that the sunrise is getting earlier. This, of course, means summer is coming. Right now!

It's pretty distinctly winter here, though. It's fifty-ish, and rainy (actually, dreary as all hell) and weird to be back, sort of. I love it. I didn't remember all the aspects of Portland that I'm recognizing now, and I certainly didn't realize how windy and cold it is during the day- I'd sort of blissed out on 70 degree days in Texas. I'm happy to be back though. Gm is making spankopita (or however it's called) for dinner and we already made broccoli cheese soup, and people are supposed to come over and enjoy it with us. Mmm. Every now and then, he wanders over and kisses me. I am hopelessly in love with him.

I've missed this sort of lazy afternoon and easy days. Gm went to the grocery and played in a cakewalk, so now we have chocolate cake from yesterday that we made plus this new bakery carrot cake. I will totally be burnt out on cake before my birthday ever gets here. If we were in Plano, I'd get a fruit tart from La Madeleine. Delicious!

I'm getting chilly sitting here and want a shower. Enough writing for now.
